Two types of abdominoplasty are generally done, depending upon
the severity of the problem. A mini-abdominoplasty is performed
through a small incision just above the pubic area, similar in size
to a cesarean-section scar.
In this procedure, the lower abdominal muscles are tightened, fat
is removed using liposuction, and then the small amount of excess
skin is removed. No repositioning of the belly button is required.
Most women who have mini abdominoplasties do not have a lot of excess
skin.
A full abdominoplasty is performed on women who have a lot of excess
skin, or loss of skin elasticity caused by severe stretch marks.
In these cases, excess skin below the belly button is removed, and
the abdominal muscles are tightened all the way from the lower part
of the breast bone down to the pubic area.
The remaining skin is pulled down smoothly, and the navel is relocated.
The resulting scar is somewhat longer but easily hidden by most
bikini bottoms.
