| Liposuction
Liposuction is the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure performed
in America. This fact is not surprising because it is an affordable,
rewarding and safe way to lose problem areas of fat that have been
frustratingly unresponsive to diet and exercise.
Dr. Elam began to practice liposuction in 1982 and is the past
president of the American Society of Liposuction Surgery. Dr. Elam
co authored one of the first textbooks on Liposuction surgery and
has personally trained many physicians in the art of body sculpting.
Since 1982 he has continually strived to increase the safety and
effectiveness of the procedure. It is Dr. Elam’s experience
that patients judge results not only by the amount of fat removed,
but also by the post- surgical appearance of their skin. With proper
surgical technique you are able to remove large volumes of fat while
also creating a smooth and contoured appearance to the skin.
The tumescent technique (saline infusion of fatty tissue) utilized
in liposuction enables larger removals of fat with minimized blood
loss. As the surgeon this technique allows you to sculpt your patients
body with a remarkable decrease in the amount of bruising, pain,
and swelling in the recovery period. To the patient this means increased
safety, more volume removal, an easier recovery and greatly improved
results.
In liposuction surgery, what is left behind is often more important
than what is taken out. During an initial consultation, Dr. Elam
will determine with the patient the amount of fat that may be removed
and which areas should be treated to obtain an optimal result. Since
localized fat deposits obscure the normal muscular skeletal contour
of the body, the objective of liposuction is to enhance the patient’s
own muscular skeletal framework.
It is important to establish a good rapport with your surgeon,
and feel free to ask to speak to former patients about their experience.
You will be pleased to discover how liposuction can make you feel
youthful, healthy and more attractive than ever before.
Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck
An abdominoplasty is sometimes called a “tummy tuck.”
An abdominoplasty is a major surgical procedure to remove excess
skin from the middle and lower abdomen and to tighten the muscles
of the abdominal wall. The procedure can dramatically reduce the
appearance of a protruding abdomen. It does produce a permanent
scar, which, depending on the extent of the original problem and
the surgery required to correct it, can extend from hip to hip.
If the original problem is not as severe a mini tuck may be performed,
which leaves a scar similar to that of a c-section.
The best candidates for abdominoplasty are men or women who are
in relatively good shape but are bothered by a large fat deposit
or loose abdominal skin that won’t respond to diet or exercise.
The surgery is particularly helpful to women who, through multiple
pregnancies, have stretched their abdominal muscles and skin beyond
the point where they can return to a normal pre pregnancy state.
Loss of skin elasticity in older patients or patients who where
slightly obese can also see an immense improvement with an abdominoplasty.
As with all surgeries it is important to establish a good rapport
with your surgeon, and feel free to ask to speak to former patients
about their experience. You will be pleased to discover how an abdominoplasty
can make you feel youthful, healthy and more attractive than ever
before.
Gynecomastia (breast reduction in men)
Gynecomastia is a medical term that comes from the Greek words
for "woman—like breasts." Though this oddly named
condition is rarely talked about, it is actually quite common. Gynecomastia
affects an estimated 40% to 60% of men.
It may affect only one breast or both. Though certain drugs and
medical problems have been linked with male breast over development,
there is no known cause in the vast majority of cases. The enlargement
can be from excess glandular tissue or fat or both.
For men who feel self-conscious about their appearance, breast-reduction
surgery can help. The procedure removes fat and or glandular tissue
from the breasts, and in extreme cases removes excess skin, resulting
in a chest that is flatter, firmer, and better contoured.
Surgery to correct gynecomastia can be performed on healthy, emotionally
stable men of any age. The best candidates for surgery have firm,
elastic skin that will reshape to the body's new contours.
